Two Federal Cabinet ministers have been appointed as Chair and Deputy Chair of the Disaster Mitigation Council.
Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin and Minster of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett have been appointed Chair and Deputy Chair respectively following a review of the Council during the recent Cabinet Meeting.
"Cabinet also advised that there be ongoing dialogue with the Hon. Premier’s Office and the Nevis Disaster Committee to ensure a well-coordinated strategy in our disaster mitigation efforts during this hurricane season," Minister of Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said.
The Disaster Mitigation Council was established following the devastating impact of Hurricane Georges in 1998 in an attempt to reduce the impact of hazards resulting from hurricanes and other natural disasters.
The specific objectives of the Council include working out a post-disaster recovery programme, reviewing proposals for post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation, coordinating government’s ongoing programme for reducing vulnerability to disasters and recommending economic preparedness planning and policy for the government.
