Three bronze sculptures of the "National Bird," the Brown Pelican, will adorn the roundabout at the Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), when the infrastructural works are completed by October 1, 2013.
The works, which will be carried out in four phases, began on June 19, 2013. Phase 1 is the construction of the roundabout itself that will be finished by the end of August. This includes the erection of the concrete walls and installation of the pavement.
The installation of the lighted SXM signs will constitute the second phase while in the third phase, the bronze sculptures of the pelicans, being made by famed sculptor, Mike Maghiro, will be erected. The final phase is the greenery to beautify the whole roundabout.
When finished, the roundabout, which is being fully financed by SXM, will be turned over to the government of St. Maarten as a contribution from the airport as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations.
