On Saturday, October 27, the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Council of Beacon Hill/Maho/Cupecoy will be holding their first "Get to Know Your Neighbour" event at Sunset Beach Bar. This event is open to all residents and businesses of these communities. It will be held from 2-5pm and there will be a cash bar for refreshments.
"The best way to create safer communities begins by knowing who your neighbours are and then developing those relationships," said Rebecca Low, President of the Council. "By bringing everyone together we create stronger ties and from that, people start to look after one another more. Our aim is to have strong Neighbourhood Watch programs eventually come out of this first step."
The Council was created at the end of August as part of the St Maarten Police Force’s COP (Community Oriented Policing) initiative. The Council is comprised of community representatives, businesses and the AUC. Its mandate is to enhance the safety and security of individuals, families, businesses and visitors in the Beacon Hill/Maho/Cupecoy neighbourhoods. The first year board consists of Rebecca Low (President), Dino Jagtiani (Vice President) and Kathryn Behrisch (Secretary). The Council works in close collaboration with Community Police Officer, Major Joe Josepha to implement a variety of initiatives to improve safety. Two community meetings have been held to date at the AUC medical school.
