During Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Hon. Silveria Jacobs trip to Uruguay recently, the Minister had the opportunity to meet with Uruguay government officials with respect to areas of cooperation between Uruguay and Sint Maarten.
Minister Jacobs made use of the opportunity to meet with Vice-Minister of Education, Science and Culture of Uruguay Oscar Gomez, as well as with the head of Uruguay’s Cultural Department to foster ties of cooperation in the areas of promoting our cultural heritage, education, science and technology. It was a unique opportunity for the exchange of ideas.
"My delegation also was able to meet and hold fruitful dialogue with our counterparts in the Caribbean region in order to facilitate the setting up of our National Commissions. Support was pledged from the regional cluster office in Jamaica in the person of Director Dr. Kwame Boafo (who will conduct a training session in November) as well as several other State representatives and Secretary Generals of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from various other island states such as Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis among others.
"As a Caribbean region we were unified in our approach and well represented in the committees in which we prepared and debated the final document to be submitted to Paris.
"As a result, Erik Falt, assistant Director General UNESCO also pledged the assistance of the main office in Paris in the preparation and training of our National Commission during early spring of 2013," Minister Silveria Jacobs said on Friday.
Minister Jacobs recently attended the UNESCO Consultation of the Director-General with Member States and National CommCommissions of Latin American and the Caribbean Region.
