President of Parliament Hon. drs. Gracita Arrindell recently met with United States Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Congressman John Conyers Jr. and Biden’s wife Dr. Jill Biden during an official working visit to the U.S.
Arrindell was invited to attend Women’s History Month Celebration which took place at the U.S. Vice President’s official residence.
The President of Parliament was the guest of U.S. Congressman John Conyers Jr.
Congressman John Conyers Jr., a Detroit Democrat, was re-elected to represent the 14th Congressional District in November of 2010, to his 24th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Conyers entered the House in 1965, and is the second most senior member in the House of Representatives.
U.S. Congressman Conyers Jr. is also one of the 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus and is considered the Dean of that group.
In attendance among others at the Women’s History Month event, were several accomplished women in the political, media and business world, of which many have never visited Sint Maarten before.
"I am very grateful to the Congressman for extending the invitation to me. It was an opportunity to brief the different personalities that I met especially the Vice President about the constitutional transition that we went through to become a country and our current state of affairs in building the country, especially the institutions.
"Not many are aware of our new constitutional structure. Parliament is a new institution of governance and the Government of the country. Everybody that I spoke with was very interested in learning more about our country," President of Parliament Hon. drs. Gracita Arrindell said on Monday.
Arrindell presented Vice President Biden and Mrs. Biden with several books: Sint Maarten Past and Present by J. Speetjens, National Symbols of Sint Maarten L. Sekou, and Parliament’s Information Booklet.
The event took place on March 26 and the invitation to attend was issued at short notice.
