The Family Supervision on Bonaire has been renewed. Recently the family supervisors informed a broad group of colleagues from among others schools, the Guardianship Council, Jong Bonaire, the EOZ, Forma about the changes at Family Supervision. Coordinator Brenda Simmons explained that before 10-10-10 the family supervision tasks were assigned to the ‘Stichting Guia di Famia’.
That foundation received too limited a budget from the Netherlands Antilles, an as a consequence was not able to perform its duties well. Last year, the board asked the ‘Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland’ if they could help out temporarily. This is how Family Supervision became the ‘foster child’ of the RCN. Because things were going well with the foster child within the new family it was decided in good consultation with the board of ‘Guia di Famia’ and the RCN to keep Family Supervision at the RCN. Currently, family supervision is a department within the RCN-unit "Caribbean Netherlands Youth care and Family Supervision".
The work method of Family Supervision has changed. Full of verve the current three family supervisors explained that they now work under the Delta-method. There are still two vacancies for family supervisors for which recruiting efforts are currently being undertaken. In addition, there is a behavioral scientist to assist the team. A family is assigned a family supervisor when there are concerns about the development of a child and the parents must accept help. The family supervisor is the care provider of the family. With this method the family supervisors work closer together with the parents. In this way the parents too can indicate what goals they want to achieve. The Delta-method was developed in the Netherlands and has been adapted to the situation in Bonaire: the Delta-method, Bonaire model.
