HILVERSUM – To mark the launch of its Caribbean editorial team in Curacao on Friday 8 October, Radio Netherlands Worldwide is organising a debate, 10•10•10… what next? (10•10•10… i despues?). Those taking part will discuss the future of the nations within the Kingdom of the Netherlands after the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles. The debate will be broadcasted live on TeleCuraçao and Radio Hoyer 1.
History will be made on 10 October 2010, when the islands of Curacao and St. Maarten become autonomous parts of the Netherlands and the smaller islands of Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius become special Dutch municipalities. But how do the people of the islands feel about this? How do they see the future after their change of status?
Debate
The results of a survey of Netherlands Antilles residents conducted by RNW on issues including the provision of news on the islands will be the starting point for the debate.
It will be held at Teatro Luna Blou from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm. The working language will be Papiamento, with Dutch interpreting available. After the debate, the new Caribbean editorial team will launch its website and there will be all kinds of festivities.
Young journalists
In addition to its productions, the Caribbean editorial team will also be responsible for training young journalists. Radio Netherlands Worldwide hopes the 10•10•10… what next? debate will encourage young people to participate actively in the media. It is the latest of a series of debates organised by RNW in Curacao. RNW also wishes to contribute to the discussion among local people about future development after the change of status of the islands.
Caribbean Editorial Team
RNW’s Caribbean editorial team is launching a website to provide local news via audio, video and text, in both Dutch and Papiamento, focusing on Suriname, the islands of the former Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Some 25 media partners in the region, currently broadcast or publish RNW productions.
