Middle Region/Defiance-On Sunday, April 18, 2010 no less than six teams participated in the first ever held annual Alec "the Butcher" Richardson Basketball Knockout.
Many residents came out and supported the player’s big times. The games started at approximately 2.00pm and the final ended at 10.30 pm. For the exception of the first game all the other games were nail biters and either team could have won.
At the end of the knock out all the players were presented with a medal and the name of the tournament inscribed in it. These medals were presented to the players by a member of the board Ms. Angelica Chittick who was also a driving force behind this tournament. Second place went to Lower Middle Region under the leadership of Slim who was the crowd favorites from the beginning.
The Sub-champion was Center Middle Region and they were leading the tournament for the entire evening with two wins and no losses. The decisive games were played between Upper Middle Region captained by Michael and Center Middle Region under the leadership of Junior.
"Unfortunately, we did not select a most valuable player for the tournament, says Mr. Lenny Priest, but players of the other teams and fans alike stated that the best player was a twelve year old Mr. Andrew Richardson. He was the shortest player of the tournament. His tree pointers, his hustling and free throws were awesome. A few arguments during the tournament was during the championship game when one of the players systematically felt that his team was being out hustled by Mr. Andrew Richardson. During the presentation of the prizes Ali as he is known in the community took off his medal and presented it to Mr. Andrew Richardson with these words, you are MVP of this tournament.
The Middle Region & Defiance Community Council hailed the tournament a great success. "We want to extend a great thank you to the organizer of the tournament, our board member and Sport Coordinator, Mr. Patrice Cocks. You have made us all proud and a job well done.
We are planning to organize such a tournament during the summer vacation in the month of July 2010. Many of our young people will be out of school and this would be a great event for them to practice for and eventually participate in it. However, the date will be announce at a later date.
