Nevertheless, he thinks it is time for a social discussion on euthanasia and abortion. In this, as a private person, Atacho responds on amendments of the legislation for the BES-Islands, in which the homo-marriage, euthanasia and abortion will be regulated legally on these islands in another two years.
Atacho is personally against the aforementioned for principle and religious reasons, but emphasizes that he respects everyone. "We must acknowledge that our community is not ready for this yet, perhaps in another thirty or forty years. I wish to stress that the 22 members of the States of the Antilles, or the members of the parliaments of Curaçao and St. Maarten should decide whether to adjust our Civil Code. The Netherlands has no voice in this."
Illegal abortions
Abortion and euthanasia are a different matter, according to Atacho. "We must be honest. A large number of illegal abortions are currently being carried out. We cannot shut our eyes as to how these abortions are performed, endangering the life of mother and child. As citizen, and not as politician, I wonder why we should not arrange this better."
Atacho also offered his opinion on euthanasia. "How does one react in the case of terminal patients with chronic unbearable pains? I am not talking about people with headaches, or those tired of living, due to problems at work and such. I would consider it a good case, if we could hold a healthy discussion on these subjects, as a community."
Atacho argued for open discussions on subjects such as abortion and euthanasia – compared to putting them under taboo. "The community must take a viewpoint on these issues." However, he called on politicians not to mingle with the discussion in order not to influence these with their own viewpoints.
