The Schottegat will function as temporary homeport, where the Henson will carry out repairs, bunker, test equipment and the crew will enjoy a little R & R. Besides the activities in port, the Henson will be testing an autonomic underwater vehicle (auv) at open sea. The vehicle measures the contours of the sea floor, and can even take water samples.
The location was selected on the basis of essential characteristics of the underwater scenery in the waters surrounding the island, the American consulate states in an explanation. "Curaçao has ideal test circumstances." Moreover, the results could also benefit the local government. "We invite the government to participate in the research."
The research will take place within the framework of research obligations of the US Southern Command as support to the Partnership of Americas. The Henson is one of the seven research ships of the American Navy. The fleet resorts under the Military Sealift Command for the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. The Henson has a crew of 55. More information can be found on https://oceanography.navy.mil/legacy/web
