St.Kitts, Anguilla, & St.Maarten have been named as venues for the Zone A & B preliminary matches. This was announced today at a press conference held at the NAGICO’s head office on Thursday 17th 2009.
The semi finals and finals will be held in St. Maarten on October 16th, 17th & 18th respectively at the Carib Lumber Ball Park Grounds just outside the capital Philipsburg.
There has also been an increase in this year’s prize money which will now be EC$7000.00 for the winners and EC 3000.00 for the runners up. The total funds for prize money and coordination of the tournament, EC $110,000.00, was presented to LICA President Gregory Shillingford.
The eight competing teams are assigned to two (2) groups; St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and BVI make up Zone A while the Zone B teams are Anguilla, Antigua, St. Maarten and USVI. The defending champions this year are Antigua.
President of LICA Gregory Shillingford expressed his appreciation that NAGICO has decided to sponsor this year’s tournament and partner with LICA for a seventh year. He added, "I really want to thank McSood Amjad and his team and I want to reiterate that LICA will deliver value to our sponsors and the cricketing fans across the region and we are committed to working with NAGICO to provide a basis for our regional cricketing growth.
CEO McSood Amjad noted that the development of cricket should not suffer because of the region’s economic downturn; he called on more Caribbean companies to step forward and boost this popular sport in the region. Mr. Amjad added that at times like these it was even more important to have sporting activities to provide the youth and cricket fans with a chance for release of energy and showcase of talent.
