NAGICO Insurances is collaborating with the Department of Education Research Planning & Innovation (DERPI) to provide its staff with the opportunity to attend "Active Parenting" courses. NAGICO agreed to have the video based parenting education program taught at its head office during working hours.
Coordinator of Parental Involvement Mrs. Edna Rijkard stated, "We initially targeted elementary teachers and parents but we eventually decided to approach companies because, being able to teach the courses on the job allows us to reach a group of people who normally would not attend."
NAGICO Insurances is the first company to participate in DERPIās corporate initiative. "We choose NAGICO because they are very involved in numerous family oriented projects. We knew that if we approached them, they would be on board" stated, Mrs. Rijkard. The program is based on small groups coming together to learn and discuss different methods of parenting and problem solving. Relationship building and proper communication are the basis for most of the work that is taught during the sessions. Active Parenting Instructor Mr. Rodney Davis explained, "The program involves a strong foundation in the development of communication skills. Based on this fact, we realized that businesses might have been interested in offering it to their staff." Mr. Davis added, "Having an employee who enhances their own personal life results in an increase in productivity, interpersonal relationships and teamwork. I am positive NAGICO will benefit from these increases."
