Alcalá-Wallé: Amputation in itself is already traumatic

WILLEMSTAD — "It is very troublesome that a patient who has just underwent an amputation – which in itself is already a painful and often traumatic experience – he/she has to arrange for the cremation or burial of his/her limb" according to the former deputy Marilyn Alcalá-Wallé (PAR).

In this, she responds to the news that the St. Elisabeth Hospital (Sehos) decided they would no longer take care of amputated limbs. The patient is now responsible for what happens with the amputated limb.

Alcalá-Wallé continues by saying, "In addition, it is troublesome that until recently the hospital collected all amputated limbs and burned these in a special oven for 75 guilders and suddenly the procedures have changed, which means that the hospital is no longer responsible for what happens with the amputated limbs" according to the PAR.
Alcalá-Wallé refers to the higher costs for the patient, namely the cremation or burial of the amputated limb, than the original costs that were paid by the hospital. "Via an undertaker, the patient is forced to go through the entire procedure as if it regards a complete funeral with a price tag of at least 700 guilders, without taking the patient’s financial situation into consideration, who has just underwent an amputation" according to Alcalá-Wallé.
From the news coverage, the PAR concludes that according to the Sehos, the insurance companies do not refund the costs for the cremation or burial of the amputated limbs and that’s why the hospital had to discontinue these services. The patient is referred to an undertaker to bury the amputated limb. "In view of this development, the PAR party foresees that in the future patients will argue to take care of the amputated limb themselves, for example by burying it in their own garden" according to the party.
The PAR requests the government to intermediate as quickly as possible in order to come up with an acceptable solution before patients claim the right to dispose of their amputated limb.
