Leader of Government Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams, extends congratulations to Haiti’s Prime Minister, Michele Pierre-Louis, the second woman to become prime minister of the Caribbean nation.
Pierre-Louis (61), an educator by profession, is internationally known for her work on behalf of the poor and youth in Haiti. She headed the independent educational and cultural organization, Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty (FOKAL), which aims to support the development of children, youth organizations, youth civil society associations, peasants and women’s organizations.
"Whenever a woman excels to a leadership position I am ecstatic. Women most of the time encounter obstacles along the path of development, however due to our steadfastness and determination, we work hard to achieve what we want and where we want to go.
"Despite the challenges and the three-month battle to select a prime minister of Haiti, Ms. Michele Pierre-Louis received the support of Haiti’s Senate. I am proud to see another woman at the helm of a Caribbean nation," Leader of Government Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams told the Government Information Service (GIS).
The first women to hold the position of prime minister in Haiti was Claudette Werleigh who served from November 1995 to February 1996.
