Commissioner Buncamper says Caribbean Olympians role models for region and nation’s youth

On Thursday Commissioner of Sports Maria Buncamper-Molanus joined the many voices of leaders across the region in congratulating the magnificent performance of Caribbean athletes at the Bird Nest Olympics Stadium in Beijing, China.

Jamaican and Trinidadian Olympians have done exceptionally well. Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser, Kerone Stewart, Sherone Simpson and world record run by Usain Bolt, have all excelled at the Beijing Olympics, including Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago.

"What has been accomplished by Caribbean athletes demonstrates that there is nothing that we cannot accomplish. They are role models for the region’s youth including those here on St. Maarten. They have made history at the 29th Olympiad. As a Caribbean people, we can be proud of their performances including that of Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles who was disqualified after finishing second in the Olympic 200 meters final.

"I extend congratulations to the Governments and Peoples of Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago on behalf of the people and Government of St. Maarten. As Commissioner of Sports, I am sure that the admiration of their accomplishments is felt by all athletes and sport-loving people within our community. Our Caribbean Olympians are a great symbol of what Caribbean people are capable of," Commissioner Maria Buncamper-Molanus told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Thursday.
