Sundial School given healthcare 101, possibility of seeking a career in health
On August 13th and 14th, students of the Sundial School were invited to Sector Health Care Affairs to get a first hand look of how that sector operates within the community of St. Maarten. Presentations were given by the Ambulance Department, Hygiene & Veterinary Department, Preventive Health Department and the HIV/AIDS Programme Management Team.
The students were given a general introduction to Sector Health Care Affairs by Director Jorien Wuite. Myra Sprott and Cornelius de Weever of the HIV/AIDS Programme Management Team told the students all about HIV/AIDS, safe sex practices and the HIV/AIDS Programme Management Team.
Maria Henry of Preventive Health Care gave the students an introduction to that department by explaining the structure of that section, and thereafter going into the vision, mission and goal of the Preventive Health Care Department.
Henry told us that Preventive Health Care focuses on the overall health of the entire population as compared to a medical doctor that deals with patients one on one. Mayra Martina who is responsible for Daycare Inspection gave an explanation of what she looks for during a daycare inspection and the criteria that one must follow in order to get a permit to open a day care center.
The students were also given a first hand look of what the inside of an ambulance looks like and what the different equipment and material in the ambulance are used for. The presentation was given by Tynisha Arrendell of the Ambulance Department. Maria van Heyningen of the Hygiene & Veterinary Department gave the students a presentation on that department.
