FAMU-SXM MOU
The Executive Council has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) that allows students to continue to enjoy the benefits of such an agreement without Government and FAMU signing such an agreement annually. Among the benefits, the MOU allows students to get reduced tuition at that institution which is equivalent to in-state tuition.
Presently there are 26 students attending that institution. During the 2008-2009 academic year the enrolment of study financing recipients at that institution will increase by 8 to 34.
For some time now St. Maarten study financing recipients have been benefiting from this understanding with FAMU. Similar agreements exist between St. Maarten and other such institutions in Tallahassee.
The government is appreciative of such agreements, especially at a time of rising costs in tuition at universities. The agreement builds on the Sister City Agreement established between St. Maarten and Tallahassee several years ago.
