St. Maarten the Big Winners at the NAGICO Basketball Tournament All-Star Game
The week was packed with thrills as the NAGICO Basketball All-Star Week rounded up on Saturday. The week consisted of a slam dunk and 3 pointer competition, All Star games in the veteran division, B-division and A-division, ending off with regional matches between St. Kitts, Aruba, St. Martin and St. Maarten.
The slam dunk competition was won by Pascal Vanterpool in the B â?? Class and Edwin Samson in the A â?? class. Following the slam dunk competition was the 3 point shoot out which was eventually won by Jason Davis in the B â??Class and Kerry Charles in the A â?? Class.
The All star game was the next event that followed with the Western conference proofing to strong for the East, winning 2 out of the 3 games played. The All-Star game for the B â?? Class ended in 50 â?? 47 for the East. The top scorer Shanon Scott scored 16 points for the East while Orlando Raymond scored 14 points for the West. The All-Star Veterans game ended 76 â?? 56 for the West with Orville Gumbs running away as the games top scorer for his contribution with 22 points.
The All-Star A – Class game ended in 84 to 71 with the West proving a bit too much for their Eastern counter-parts. After winning the slam dunk competition, Edwin Samson showed his quality by ending the evening as the top scorer for the East with 14 points. As the last buzzer sounded to end the match, it was Traval Bryan of the Kings who would receive the game top scorer title with 16 points.
Also participating in the NAGICO All Star Week was the St. Maarten National Junior Team which was given the opportunity to play a best of (3) three games versus northern rivals, St. Martin. The first game turned out to be very offensive, ending in 86 â?? 75 for St. Maarten. Edison Hodge dominated the game ending the night with 32 points. The following game was won by St. Martin 63 â?? 55 with Terry Green ending the night with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. The tie breaker between the two teams was played on July 19th with St. Martin winning by a 10 point margin. Even though Allision Hodge was the games top scorer with 20 points, Orlando Raymond led the winning team in scoring with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
The last half of the NAGICO Basketball All-Star week was filled with excitement as the St. Maarten National Selection were the eventual winners, ending the competition undefeated. St. Maarten was given a run for their money during the first match against St. Martin having to go to extra time to get the win. The second two games ended with St. Maarten dominating the competition in a 84 -58 win against Aruba and a 76 â?? 52 win versus St. Kitts. St. Kitts came in (2nd) second runners up with St. Martin coming in (3rd) place.
