On Sunday, December 6th Sint Maarten will be observing THANKSGIVING Sunday, a day designated by the Government of Sint Maarten more than a decade ago.
This was done by re-instituting a tradition of thanksgiving, that was proclaimed early in the 20th century.
While the focus was on giving thanks to the Almighty for bringing us safely through the hurricane seasons, it became much more as Sint Maarten gathered to give thanks for our island’s live and that of our people.
It’s a time to remember the less fortunate among us; to pray for our young people and encourage those, young and old, who seek to make a difference in their lives and that of others. It’s a time to count our blessings and ask for courage to face our challenges which we undoubtedly had and will have.
Over time, this thanksgiving commemoration became a collaborate effort between the government and the community of churches, another example of the uniqueness of our island.
Thanks giving Sunday also officially signals the start of the Christmas season on Sint Maarten, a time for family traditions, community spirit and overall cheer.
This thanksgiving Sunday, I express my heartfelt appreciation to the persons who have labored to make this event one of love, year after year. A special thank-you to the indomitable Mrs. Irene Hodge and her crew for recreating the Christmas spirit ever so beautifully and a profound thanks to all the church leaders who joined in and gave their support to this endeavor.
May God continue to bless our island Sint maarten and all its people.
