Montserrat tramples USVI to end Nagico campaign

 

CAYON, ST. KITTS—Despite putting on their best batting performance since the start of the tournament, USVI was still not able to match up to the batting prowess of Montserrat who stomped them by 168 runs yesterday in the Nagico Cricket Tournament.

The match was played at the St. Mary’s Cricket Grounds in Cayon, St. Kitts. Montserrat, batting first set 332 for nine without their star batsman Lionel Baker who took a rest. USVI in reply made 164 all out in 31.5 overs. Jason Peters shone bright for Montserrat with 65 runs and new captain Omari Allen 46 runs. But it was Dolton Tuitt that scored the highest with 77 runs before he was bowled by Samuel Jones. Nesta Piper notched 46 runs and McPherson Meade failed to score being bowled by Gary Daniel. Daniel took three wickets for 59 runs, Samuel Jones two for 59 and Andrew Eusibe one for 33.

Bonnel Andrew for USVI scored 64 runs, the highest for his team in the competition. He was eventually run out from the bowling of S. Burns. Andrew was supported by Gary Daniel on 14, Larry Audain on 10 and Kenly Vidal on 13.Doyle Jones scored three, Nyra Stewart six Dale Africa, two, Samuel Jones and Andrew Yousuff were both out for 0 and Dale Weston bowled for 29 by D. Williams. Ray Frederick was not out on one. Bowling for Montserrat, Quinton Boatswain, who has been great in the bowling department, took four for 34, Sheldon Weekes two for 51, Damien Williams two for 14 and Tevin Osbourne one for 16.

Montserrat’s coach Jeff Lane believes the team played a better game yesterday and he is sure to have at least three players from his team on the Leeward Islands selection for the regional one day tournament in Guyana next month, namely Jason Peters, the perennial Lionel baker and off spinner Tevin Osbourne. Montserrat and USVI will not move on from Zone A of the competition and exited the tournament with yesterday’s match.
