We have to demand respect and dignity in Saba

Host of the weekly radio program "Changes" Mr. Dave Levenstone has called on the population of Saba during his program on Monday night to demand respect and dignity from everyone coming to the island. Levenstone said that here of late he has seen where some people that are coming to the island are wanting to treat Saba people as if they are a bunch of idiots, Donkeys and goats and this has to stop immediately.

Our fore fathers has worked too hard for us to have to sit back and allow others to dictate what is good for our little island. Our fore fathers has done without many things in their lives but were still able to keep this little piece of paradise going.

Levenstone said that as Sabans we have to demand respect and whoever comes here and do not respect our way of living should just leave we did not need them in the past and I don’t think we need them in the future.

Our new constitutional relationship with the Netherlands should not make anyone feel that they can come here and tell us as a proud people how we have to run our island. My family has been here for over 400 years also and that does not mean that I have to give in to everything. As proud Sabans we have to stand up and demand respect. I don’t care where they come from, Sabans are a strong minded group of people and we have to demand for everyone to respect our culture and our dignity. We are all prepared to die for our dignity and we should stand firm as one people.

We welcome everyone to our shores but they have to respect us as we will remain Caribbean people and our new status does not make us feel any different towards our culture.

Levenstone called on the elected politicians to stand up and demand respect from everyone and don’t gave in just for the sake of a few guilders. We have made it with little and we can continue to do so.
