The Ministry of Public Health Social Development & Labor would is urging employer’s to provide their employees with pay slips, which is based on the law, Book 7A title 7A of the Civil Code.
Minister of Public Health Social Development & Labor, Cornelius De Weever mentioned that he has received several complaints about the practice of employers not doing the right thing and providing inaccurate pay slips to their employees.
It is stated that for any payments of fixed wages, the employer is obligated to provide the employee with a written declaration (salary slip) of the salary amount, the amounts of which this is composed of, the amounts that have been withheld from the salary, as well as the salary amount a person of similar age as the employee is entitled to over the period in which the salary is calculated pursuant to the provisions under the minimum wage ordinance.
In addition the ordinance states that the written declaration must also mention the name of the employer and the employee, the date of entering the service, the period for which pay is calculated, as well as the agreed working hours.
"I am asking all employers to follow the law and do the right thing. Let us work together to build St. Maarten, and not exploit our workers," said Minister of Public Health Social Development & Labor, Cornelius De Weever.
