Prime Minister: "Curacao and St. Maarten will work on a joint proposal and a plan of action within the next two weeks that will include the steps to be taken to come to a durable solution for the CBCS"
The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams stated over the weekend that both her Government in St. Maarten and that of Curacao Prime Minister Daniel Hodge have agreed to work on a proposal and a plan of action that will include the steps to be taken to come to a durable solution for the CBCS within the next two weeks.
On January 16th, the Prime Ministers Wescot-Williams and Hodge met on Curacao to have their first formal meeting following the installation of the new Transitional Government on Curacao. The meeting was the result of an invitation by Prime Minister Wescot-Williams to Prime Minister Hodge to have their first official meeting and to exchange views regarding the Central Bank of Curacao and St. Maarten and the way forward for both countries. Wescot-Williams took the initiative after the St. Maarten Government took note of the view of the Government of Curacao as formulated in its Governing Agreement which calls for a reevaluation of the monetary union in which both countries participate.
"The Government of St. Maarten is on record stating that the 2 countries must be willing to evaluate the functioning of the monetary union after more than two years and countless obstacles encountered in the execution of its responsibilities by this institution. We have therefore agreed to work towards a solution that is in the interest of both countries in the short and long term. Keeping this in mind the two respective Governments will work on a joint proposal and a plan of action within the next two weeks that will include the steps to be taken to come to a durable solution for the CBCS," commented the Prime Minister
