On January 22, 2009, a group of 15 "Active Parenting LEADERS", have completed an intensive training program and passed the requirements to become certified to train those interested in leading the video-based "Active Parenting NOW in 3" Program.
The "Training of Trainers" seminar, held January 20 – 22 at the Carls and Son Conference Centre in Cole Bay, was led by the founder of the program, Dr. M. Popkin, who reviewed the principles of Active Parenting program, tips for conducting training workshops and techniques for effective presentation. Candidates for certification were required to pass a written examination and were evaluated on their presentation of Active Parenting concepts.
The last training day was closed with the official handing over ceremony of the certificates of Active Parenting LEADERS, who took part in the LEADER training workshop held in September 2008. The participants of the LEADER workshops were taught how to use the combination of video, discussion, and group activities to make their parent workshops entertaining and filled with practical skills, parents can start using immediately.
These "Active Parenting LEADERS" have been conducting parent workshops in the different schools and organization for the last 4 months.
The ceremony consisted of an official handing over of the Active Parenting LEADER certificates by the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. S. Wescot-Williams and an address by the founder of the program, Dr. M. Popkin.
DERPI takes this opportunity to thank all involved for their enthusiasm and motivation. The continuation and the success of this program will depend on the involvement of the community of Sint Maarten.
The initiative of the Active Parenting program is funded by USONA as part of the implementation of Foundation Based Education.
