Social Services assists displaced couple

Last week Friday, the Departments of Social Development, Community Development and Social Services were called in by Cornelius de Weever, Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, to assist a couple that was homeless in St. Peters. Based on the Crisis Care Policy, the couple was facing a crisis and urgently in need of assistance. The couple was placed at a comfortable location in the area, where they are staying.

After hearing of the incident regarding the homeless couple in St. Peters the social worker and case worker immediately came on the scene, and got the ball rolling to make life a bit more comfortable for the couple. On Monday the Department of Social Affairs will follow-up with the couple to see how they can qualify for financial and medical assistance.

The couple was very thankful that they had a warm bed to sleep on, and a place to take a shower. The gentleman mentioned that he is willing to do any type of job, as a means of giving himself and his companion a normal existence.

"During my walk through in St. Peters with Mr. Wilson, a concerned resident, he showed me the circumstances of a couple that we found in a very unfortunate situation but I am happy that the team acted immediately and was able to assist this couple in need," said Minister de Weever. "This ministry is here to help those who may not or cannot help themselves and I applaud the team for the work they did and continue to do."

The crisis care policy assists individuals or groups that are faced with crises and urgently in need of assistance. Crises Care is handled by the Department of Social Services, and usually counseling and guidance are offered along with solutions. Assistance in a crises situation is handled within a period of 24 to 72 hours and falls under the Ministry of Public Health Social Development & Labor.
