This last weekend was a very busy one for the police traffic department. Several traffic accidents have taken place on the Dutch side of the island in which at least ten persons were injured and one fatality.
The fatal accident took place on Sunday June 19th at approximately 10.30 p.m. at the entrance of Amsterdam Shopping Center between the private vehicles with license plate M-8002 and a scooter on which two persons were riding with license plate Mf-611.
The M-8002 was driving in the direction of Mount William Hill while the scooter came from the opposite direction. Both vehicles collided exactly at the entrance of the Amsterdam Shopping Center, with the right front corner M-8002 hitting the scooter while making a left turn into the parking lot of the Amsterdam Shopping Center. As a result of this impact both occupants of the scooter fell to the ground seriously injuring one occupant and fatally injuring the other occupant by the name of Marvin Michael Arrindell 16 years of age.
The death of the victim was pronounced on the scene by Dr. Mercuur at 11.00 p.m. the other victim was transported to the Sint Maarten Medical Center with a seriously fractured right leg.
All traffic to and from the Dutch Quarter area was diverted so that the police traffic department and Forensic department could conduct a thorough investigation. The driver of the M-8002 with the initials W.H. in the meantime has been arrested and held for questioning and for further investigation, because there is some suspicion, that he may have been using a controlled substance. The investigation is still ongoing. It is still unclear to what occurred prior and during this fatal accident. The Police Department is therefore asking anyone who as witnessed this accident to please contact the Traffic Department and to provide them with information that can lead to the exact cause of the accident.
