Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications Franklin Meyers, congratulates the staff of the Weather Bureau at the Princess Juliana International Airport on World Meteorological Day (WMD), which is being celebrated around the world today, March 23 by the meteorological community.
The theme for WMD 2011 is "Climate for you."
WMD commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) System. Today, the WMO comprises of 189 members.
"I also use this opportunity to congratulate the staff of the Curacao Meteorological Department as well as the aforementioned is providing services to our department until we have our own full-fledged department established within short.
"The Curacao department provides invaluable service along with the staff of the Sint Maarten Department especially during the hurricane season. That is when we hear more from our Met Service; however they play an important role every single day when they provide aviation weather data to the control tower at the airport.
"We must show appreciation for the work that they do. Congratulations on your international day," Hon. Minister Franklin Meyers said on Wednesday.
The Minister added that meteorologists are also playing a very important role where climate change is concerned. WMO activities in the area of climate are widely perceived today as key contributors to human safety and well-being and the realization of economic benefits for all nations.
