PM Douglas leads National Assembly in mourning passing of former legislator, retired police officer and deputy accountant general’s mother

A former legislator and prominent local businessman; Assistant Superintendent of Police and the mother-in-law of a government minister, were remembered during Tuesday’s sitting of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly.

Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas used the opportunity of the adjournment of the lawmaking body to expressed sympathy to the Hon. Glenn Phillip and his wife, Mrs. Phillip on the passing of her mother, Mrs. Agnes Liburd.

"I convey on behalf of this Honourable House, our deepest condolences on the passing of Mrs Agnes Liburd. She is the mother of Mrs. Melissa Phillip, the wife of the Hon. Glenn Phillip and also deserves to be comforted by this house. Mrs. Phillip is the Deputy Accountant General of the Federal Government in the Ministry of Finance and also a member of the National Bank Board. We convey to you, also Mr. Speaker our very profound condolences," said Prime Minister Douglas.

In paying tribute to former legislator, the late William A. Kelsick, Prime Minister Douglas described him as one "who has served this country endlessly, who has built the relationship between the Private Sector and the Public Sector, and in fact have set the tone for that relationship for modern St. Kitts and Nevis."

"We not only honour him for having served in this House, but also he has been one of the icons of the business community in this country; having served as the President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce and who has served on several boards. And even when there had been a change in government, my government found it necessary for him to serve, because we believe that he believed in this country, and we had confidence in what he believed this country could attain with the proper relationship between the private sector and the public sector," Dr. Douglas told the House.

Prime Minister Douglas also used the opportunity to express sympathy on the passing last week Saturday of Mr. Dudley Williams of Palmetto Point, who served with distinction in the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and at the Regional Police Training Center in Barbados. At the time of his passing, Williams was the Registration Officer for the Electoral District of St. Christopher 3 (West Basseterre).

"We extend to his family our deepest condolences and we again honour him now for the tremendous sacrifices he would have made as a Police Officer, one who could have been relied upon and one who displayed professionally of what a true police officer should be in this country," said Dr. Douglas.

"As we prepare to lay his mortal remains to rest, we not only support his family during this period of difficulty, but we wish that he would rest in eternal peace here in our beloved country," the Prime Minister said.
