The number of teenage mothers reaches the lowest point ever in the Netherlands

In 2011, 2365 girls under the age of 20 years gave birth to a child. In this age group, less than 5 girls per every thousand girls became a mother in 2011. However, there are significant differences between the various ethnic groups.

Never before so few teenage mothers

The number of teenage mothers in the Netherlands has diminished strongly in the last decades. The birth rate among girls under the age of 20 years was 4,8 per thousand in 2011. This is the lowest rate ever recorded by CBS. Forty years ago, this birth age was 22,3 per thousand girls. In almost no other European county the birth rate among teenagers is as low now as it is in the Netherlands.

No decrease among Antillean and Surinamese girls

However, the differences between the ethnic groups are big. Among Turkish immigrant girls, with a birthrate of 2,2 per thousand, teenage mothers are less common than among native girls (3,5 per thousand). However, the birth rate among the Antillean girls is high. The number of Antillean girls born in the Netherlands and who are under the age of 20 years is more than six times as high as that of the native girls. Unlike in almost all other ethnic groups, among the Antillean and Surinamese girls a decrease in numbers is hardly reported.

The ratings of the Dutch Caribbean are comparable

With 39 births per thousand, the birth rate among Antillean immigrant girls under the age of 20 who came to the Netherlands as a child or young adult, is the highest. Teenage mothers in this group are relatively as common as in the Dutch Caribbean (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba). In 2011, the birth rate for girls under the age of 20 years amounted to 38 per thousand there.
