Oranjestad – On Monday July 11th, the Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate (IVW) detained a vessel in St. Eustatius, as many defects were observed during a routine inspection.
The vessel registered under a Honduran flag showed several severe defects that are a threat for the marine safety and environment. Among the defects are structural damages to the vessel, lack of possession of valid certificate of competences and safety related issues.
The maritime authority of Honduras has been notified and asked to make the necessary corrective actions to have the vessel in a seaworthy condition before its departure to the next port. The vessel is presently at anchor near the City Pier in St. Eustatius.
Since July, Luc van Osch has been hired to act as Shipping Inspector for St. Eustatius and Saba. He will work together with the local authorities and all other relevant stakeholders in the shipping, maritime and environmental sectors to ensure sound practices are upheld.
