On the 23rd of February 2011, a seminar will be held in Curaçao for all Dutch Caribbean professionals involved in education, information and knowledge services, ICT and cultural heritage. This seminar is organized by the Dutch Caribbean Libraries and is aimed at creating dialogue with our stakeholders. The theme is: Information literacy and digitalization: key elements of a sustainable society. The goal is to explore new perspectives for cooperation.
The organization is proud to have two distinguished keynote speakers: Jesús Lau and Brooke Wooldridge. Mr. Lau is President of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and Mrs. Wooldridge is Project Coordinator of the Digital Library of the Caribbean, an internet platform providing open access to collections of various partner libraries and archives in the Caribbean. Following their keynote speeches and a panel discussion, participants will discuss cooperation in the field of information literacy and shared digitization in two workshops. The day will end with a social event in the evening.
The organization – the Dutch Caribbean Libraries – is a bustling platform of library and information professionals from the six Dutch Caribbean islands plus Surinam. Their mission is to offer a platform for professional development of its members by training, exchange of knowledge and project-based cooperation.
Digitalization is a key theme for our developing society. All educators and information professionals know that internet brings major opportunities for development and education. Not all pupils however will automatically or easily adapt to these changes in a responsible way. Moreover, not all citizens will automatically profit from these changes. As information professionals and educators, we need to face many challenges in this area together.
This is the third seminar of the platform. The full seminar comprises a three day program taking place on 23, 24 and 25 February 2011, made possible thanks to a generous grant by the Dutch KulturA Foundation. Following the kick-off on the 23rd of February, for which all stakeholders are invited, the 24th and the 25th of February will be relevant to information professionals only, with an offering of training and workshops. The seminar will be an opportunity to meet partners in the same field of work, to share experiences, compare possibilities to improve on every day practice and to arrange agreements for cooperation with participating libraries.
The Philipsburg Jubilee Library has been actively involved in the planning and organization of this third Dutch Caribbean Library seminar. During the seminar PJ library will be represented by its Director Mrs. Monique Alberts, Director and System Librarian Ms Melissa Pompier.
