He was president from 2003 to 2007 of the country and was then succeeded by his wife, Cristina Kirchner. He struggled for some time with heart problems.

Kirchner had chest pain and was admitted to a hospital in the town of El Calafate in the south of the country, where he and his wife were vacationing. A short time later he died of a heart attack. He was 60 years old. In February this year, Kirchner had already admitted to hospital with complaints. Yet the death of Kirchner in Argentina was quite a surprise.
At the presidential palace, Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires the flag is at half-mast. There are also many flowers around the palace. Kirchner was the leader of the Peronist Party, named after the former Argentine President Juan Peron and Eva Peron fold (Evita).
Dirty War
After taking office in 2003 Kirchner scrapped the amnesty for soldiers and police officers accused of murder and torture during the dirty war in Argentina. That was the period from 1976 to 1983, when Argentina was a military dictatorship.
His wife Cristina, the first female president of the country, continued actively working for the prosecution of persons who had misbehaved during the military dictatorship. Nestor Kirchner was going to candidate for the presidency next year .
Opposition leader Mauricio Macri said Wednesday, October 27th "one day of pain for all the Argentine people." Ex-president Fernando de la RĂșa called it sad that someone at the age of 60, so intense & busy with politics, is no longer there.
