Waiting for larger air purifier

WILLEMSTAD — The clearance activities at the Asphalt-lake are still at a standstill. A few weeks ago, co-workers of the Curaçao Drydock Company (CDM) had complained about the nasty smell from the Asphalt-lake.

The activities had immediately been suspended. Karel Aster, director of the NV Buskabaai, responsible for the clearance, states the complaints were correct. A research conducted prior to the clearance activities had indicated that the Asphalt-lake contained approx. 3 to 5 percent water. Upon actually starting the activities, it appeared that the lake had rather contained 10 to 15 percent water. This subsequently led to a considerable steam production, which had spread the stench. Aster assures that the stench does not contain any dangerous substances. A larger air purifier absorbing more steam and thus removing the stench for 99 percent could be the solution. It will take at least another two weeks before we receive the purifier. We shall continue the clearance activities in consultation with CDM, according to Aster.
