The Peter L. Granger Sports Auditorium came alive this past weekend with various sporting activities hosted by the Saba United Sports Federation. The weekend activities started off on Friday evening with indoor soccer being played.
The games continued on Saturday evening with indoor soccer, volley ball and basket ball. Saturday evening the Auditorium was filled to capacity with spectators, family members and well wishers of the various groups that participated in the tournament.
Mr. Emanuel York from the St. Maarten Basketball Federation also traveled to Saba over the weekend to work with the basketball players on Saba and was very busy working with them on Saturday and Sunday during the day teaching the youngsters the various techniques in basketball. Mr. York said that he was very happy to be able to assist Saba and he looks forward in a good working relationship with the Saba United Sports Federation and the youngsters of Saba. Together we have to work if we want to achieve our goals. Mr. York has promised to return in the month of November and to also bring along some other coaches with him and he also called on persons on Saba to also get involved with becoming coaches. He announced that in the month of November he will be taking several of the youngster to St. Maarten to participate in a tournament over there.
On Sunday evening the games continued and at the end of the basketball tournament Mr. York together with the board of the federation presented certificates of participation and attendance to all of the basketball players.
Commissioner with responsibilities for Sports Mr. Bruce Zagers was also present on Saturday evening to witness the games that were being played and from all indications the Commissioner was very much impressed with the manner in which the games were being played. Commissioner Zagers is an avid basketball player himself.
President of the Saba United Sports Federation Mrs. Jamilla Wilson-Berkel said that she was very much satisfied with the turnout of the community and she was extremely happy with the participation of the youngsters. This weekend has been very encouraging for me and my board and we will continue to organize these type of sporting activities for the young people of the island. As a board we are willing to work along with everyone that has sports as their priority, we are also appealing on the business community to support our endeavors as we try to get sports up and running once again on the island. In order to make this work we will need financing and we should not only have to depend on government to assist us.
