"We look forward to having all persons who want to be teachers attend this event which promises to be very informative," Dean of Academics Dr. Pribble said.

The Teacher Education Program, where successful candidates are awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree, until now has been a full time day program. But with the interest of many students who already hold day jobs, an evening program has been created so that many more may be able to enroll. The evening program will start in the Fall 2009 semester; classes begin August 17.

"Persons attending the information session will get insight about how the Teacher’s Education Program (TEP) fits with innovations in education in the Netherlands Antilles, such as Foundation Based Education (FBE), at this time," said Ms. Henry. The FBE is a concept that makes learning more student centered, interactive and hands on.

"Teachers are very much needed and teaching is still a noble profession, " Dr. Pribble said, while encouraging more young people to consider the profession.

The competencies, skills and knowledge that teachers need to be effective in the new system will also be discussed on Thursday.

To apply for the USM TEP program, students have until May 5 to submit completed applications to the Admissions Office, and will be required to sit the university placement tests May 11-18. Based on the results of the placement tests students should prepare to start classes as early as June 1.
