Commissioner responsible for Youth Affairs Louie Laveist, says that child pornography is a real and pressing global problem, and he welcomes the move by the Netherlands Antillean Parliament in passing a draft law to punish persons found guilty of involvement in child pornography in the Antilles.
The penal code has been amended, introducing a maximum of four years imprisonment for making and/or downloading, importing or exporting, possessing or exhibiting child pornography, and a fine of maximum Naf.100,000 or six years imprisonment for making this into a business.
Commissioner Laveist said over the weekend that every effort must be made to better protect the nationĂ¢??s children who are at risk adding that violence against innocent and defenseless children is an outrage.
"Children are the most vulnerable individuals in our society. They are also the most precious commodity that the world has and have a right to be protected from all forms of abuse including child pornography. I welcome the passing of the anti child pornography legislation as it is a plus for the nationĂ¢??s youth in crimes against children," Commissioner of Youth Louie Laveist told the Government Information Service (GIS).
