Women’s World T20 hero Matthews tops the list in Under-19 girls’ tourney

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Hayley Matthews will headline the list of players taking part in the Regional Girls’ Under-19 Invitational Twenty20 Tournament, starting tomorrow here.

The 18-year-old West Indies Women’s opener was the Player-of-the-Match in the Final of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Tournament last April in India, where Stafanie Taylor’s side prevailed over Australia Women to clinch their first global title.

Matthews will captain the Barbados Girls’ Under-19 team that will be defending the title which they won in the previous edition of the Tournament two years ago.

The Barbadians will face competition from Guyana, Windward Islands and hosts Trinidad & Tobago.

Jamaica and Leeward Islands have indicated that they do not have Under-19 girls’ teams at present, but are actively developing squads in a bid to participate next year.

Three other players to watch are: Reniece Boyce of T&T, along with 15-year-olds Holly Charles and Qiana Joseph of Windwards. They were involved in a WICB Emerging Players camp last week in Barbados.

The Tournament, which is staged by the T&T Cricket Board, was made a part of the WICB official calendar earlier this year and is part sponsored by the regional governing body.
