Competitive swimmers of St. Maarten Aquatic Federation (SMAF) recently received new uniforms from the all-women Island Gems Charity Foundation. The uniforms were already used by the team at the XXXI Carifta Games swimming competition in Le Lamentin, Martinique.
The team training ethics and determination caught the eyes of Island Gems members who approached them about rendering assistance where needed. The need for new uniforms were put forward and quickly approved by the island’s oldest charity organisation.
Coach Robbert Schrijvers and the team are elated with new uniforms that bear the team’s logo as well as that of Island Gems. The uniform helps to bring a sense of being even more of a team and makes the group easily recognizable as not only a collective, but as representatives of St. Maarten.
Island Gems board member Jody Rosen said it was heart-warming to support the team. “This is what Island Gems is all about. We are here to support the island’s young people to achieve their goals in whatsoever way we can,” she said.
Island Gems raises money at an annual fundraising costume gala dinner. Funds raised are used to support social, education and community projects on both sides of the island. The foundation does not give money, instead it purchases needed equipment or pays for services for qualifying organisations.
Only registered organisation on either side of the island can apply for funding via Island Gems. Projects are weighed on long term impact on the community and those who are directly involved. To apply for funding, contact any Island Gems member for details.
