Minister of Economic Affairs Connor Organizes National Economic Summit of Public and Private Sectors

Taking the first step towards articulating Sint Maarten’s national economic vision, the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication (TEATT) will be hosting a National Economic Summit to stimulate public engagement on Friday May 22nd at Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort, Casino and Spa.
Led by Minister of TEATT Hon. Claret Connor, the Summit is geared towards engaging the private sector for fruitful discussion. With the goal of ‘Designing a national economy through public-private dialogue’, the National Economic Summit intends to bring together stakeholders from both public and private sectors for open consultations.
A key component of the Summit will be the introduction of the draft National Economic Framework (NEF). This document has been drafted by the Department of Economy, Transportation and Telecommunication (EVT).  It is a draft Framework that explores ways to positively transform the country’s economy through improving the business environment and legislation; stimulating of key economic sectors; increasing business compliance and economic diversification.
According to the Department, the National Economic Framework will be the guiding document for Friday’s summit and feedback is certainly welcomed. Friday will also be a noteworthy day for EVT, because during the Summit, the Department will increase its public engagement efforts with the launching of a Facebook page: Department of Economy, Transportation and Telecommunication. The creation of a Facebook page is another avenue in which the Department will share information about developments within the Ministry of TEATT.
As Sint Maarten continues to design its National Development Plan (NDP), the Ministry found it the right time to bring together public and private sector stakeholders for vibrant discussions regarding the national economy and the NDP. Opening channels of communication, the Ministry seeks feedback from the community to ensure the national economic vision is truly representative of all.
