New year’s Message, Electoral Reform Central on Prime Minister’s Radio Program Friday

PM: "Stand still and express thanks to those who make life and living easier for all of us. The people you see every day on the streets, the cleaners, newspaper vendors and the many volunteers this country relies on"

During her weekly radio program One on One with the Prime Minister, the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams will be discussing her thoughts on 2013, plans for 2014 and the current push for electoral end election reform this Friday, January 3rd.

The Prime Minister recently emphasized that her focus with regards to electoral change is to ensure that there is stability in the system and clarity for the people who have elected their representatives, doing so on the basis of a clear program and vision of a particular political party and with the party then being able to execute their respective programs.

"Based on the frequent changes because of the shifting of alliances and allegiances in Parliament that is one of the matters in electoral reform that I have received advice on and there are various options to look at. I am now preparing a paper to submit to Parliament in order to have a discussion, a discussion devoid of politicking but in the interest of the people. There are various options with regards to electoral reform. For example within a Political Party itself or ultimately, which I believe should be the ultimate option, with changes to the constitution.

The Prime Minister will also be highlighting points from her New Year’s address focusing on what transpired in 2013 as well as what the focus should be in 2014:

"In this phase of our development as a young nation, we have a lot to learn and educate ourselves about. We all have a responsibility. We need to come to a common vision for St. Maarten. All four areas of sustainable development are important: the economy, the environment, the social sector and governance. I want to stand still a moment and express thanks to those who because of their work, make life and living easier for all of us. The people you see every day on the streets, the cleaners, newspaper vendors and the many volunteers this country relies on.

I pray that our people will rise to a level, appreciative of what we have, working together for what we want and considering the needs of others. We should all educate our children not only academically, but also through example by being the best parents, role models and leaders of this community," stressed the PM.

The radio program will broadcast live on 98.1 Pearl FM from nine to ten in the morning. Listeners are urged to interact with the Prime Minister through calling in on 5430462 or via sending an email to on************@gm***.com.
