First official Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) placed offshore of St. Eustatius

On Friday 11th January the first official Fish Aggregation Device (FAD) was placed offshore of St. Eustatius. A FAD attracts various types of fish like Tuna, Wahoo, Dolphin and Billfish. A representative of the department of fisheries of Dominica together with a fisher from Dominica have helped to design, construct and deploy the FAD.

Roberto Hensen from the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) explains the use: " We want to professionalize the fishing sector and this is a 1st step in that direction. It is a more efficient way of fishing as it saves the fishers a lot of fuel otherwise needed for trawling up and down the coastline". This new incentive is seen as an experiment and if successful others will follow. The project is a collaboration between the Department of LVV, the ministry of Economic Affairs, NuStar and the OBNA bank.
