First Fireman’s Week on St. Eustatius

The Dutch Caribbean Fire Brigade on St. Eustatius is all geared up to host their first ever Fireman’s week May 6th – 12th. Under the theme "Let us join forces, the Fire Brigade will celebrate with their families and the community.

The week long programme of activities comprises a variety of informative and fun activities. The week will open on Sunday May 6th with a service of thanksgiving at Bethel Methodist Church. Monday May 7th fire workers and retired colleagues will meet up in friendly matches as they compete against each other in ping pong, basketball and volleyball. On Tuesday and Thursday Lynch Plantation SDA, Bethel Methodist, Governor de Graaff and Golden Rock RC schools will be visited where students will learn about what it means to be a fireman. According to Local Commander Andre Bennett, "By going into schools at the primary and secondary levels, we hope to motivate young boys and girls to one day consider careers in fire fighting".

Commander General of the Dutch Caribbean Fire Brigade, Jair Tromp, will join Local Commander Bennett in the RCN’s monthly live radio talk show where they will explain to the community about their future plans. They will speak about recruitment of new staff, volunteer fire brigade, education and training, community relations and much more.

Families will be treated to a Family Day on Friday May 11th, where they can participate in games, fun activities and enjoy a BBQ lunch. The week culminates with a gala dinner at the William and Christine Flanders Community Centre on Saturday May 12th where special tribute will be paid to former firemen.
