The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has congratulated the West Indies Women’s Team on reaching the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup 2013. The Windies have so far played unbeaten in the qualifying tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh – winning all four of their preliminary matches.
In a note of congratulations to the girls, WICB President Dr Julian Hunte, praised the players for their impressive showing and urged them to strive to win the tournament which concludes this weekend.
Merissa Aguillera’s side topped their group with wins over Ireland (by 213 runs), Pakistan (by eight wickets), Japan (by 10 wickets) and Bangladesh (by 80 runs). They will meet Sri Lanka in the semi-finals on Thursday (Wednesday night Caribbean Time).
"On behalf of the WICB and the cricket loving public of the West Indies I offer congratulations to the West Indies for their excellent showing in the ICC Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament. It is very pleasing to see they have played so well in foreign conditions and have qualified for the next World Cup. The World Cup is the biggest tournament in women’s cricket and as a unit, and our team worked really hard to secure a place in the marquee event. There is a lot to play for," Dr Hunte said.
"The team has demonstrated its strength and depth with some outstanding performances. The players, by virtue of their brave efforts and positive results have given the people of the Caribbean something to cheer about. The batting has been sound, the bowling has been top-quality, and the fielding has been brilliant."
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2013 will be played in India. Before that the Windies will play in another global event, the ICC World T20 Championship, slated for Sri Lanka in September 2012.
Speaking to the players, Dr Hunte added: "As you continue your journey, we at the WICB will continue to support you and provide all that is necessary to see the team improve and make further strides forward. We believe that you can conquer the cricketing world and we expect great things in Sri Lanka next year and India in 2013."
