President of Parliament Hon. drs. Gracita Arrindell is in full support of the UN call and is appealing to the people of the nation to also do their part.

"I support the call by the UN to take part in the ‘Take Action! Inspire Change’ campaign by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in recognition of the contributions made by Mr. Nelson Mandela, as a human rights lawyer, freedom fighter, prisoner of conscience, international peace-maker, and the first democratically elected President of a free South Africa.

"There are various actions that we as individuals can make a difference within our community and at the same time thank the legendary Nelson Mandela for his work. Since it’s the school holidays, I would suggest to parents and others to tutor a child, feed someone less fortunate, care for your environment and volunteer with one of the social/civic organizations. Be a part of the process to make not only the world a better place, but first and foremost Sint Maarten," President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell said on Sunday.

In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared July 18, Mandela’s birthday, ‘Nelson Mandela International Day,’ in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

"I would also like to use this opportunity to wish Nelson Mandela, who I never met in person but had a glimpse of him during his first visit to the Netherlands many years ago, a happy 93rd birthday which he celebrates on July 18 on behalf of the people and Parliament of Sint Maarten," Gracita Arrindell concluded.
