Vandals Torch TelEm Phone Cabinet, Cut Telephone communication to St. Maarten Medical Center

TelEm Technicians are busy restoring telephone communication lines to the St. Maarten Medical Center following damage to one of the company’s telephone cabinets on the Wellgelegen Road, Cay Hill.

The telephone cabinet was set ablaze by persons or persons unknown at approximately 12:00 Midnight, Friday.

A metal bar was found on the scene indicating that the cabinet was forced open and the contents of the cabinet set alight.

TelEm Group technicians have been on the scene assessing the damage and early Saturday morning were attempt to introduce a temporary communication system for the Medical Center making use of the company’s mobile network.

Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Mr. Eldert Louisa said Saturday morning police have been called to the scene and reports are now awaited from the Fire Department.

According to Mr. Louisa the damage has affected homes and businesses in the immediate vicinity surrounding the roundabout at Link 1/junction Welgelegen Road.

"All we can say at this stage is that the damage to the cabinet seems to be deliberate and with a purpose and we urge everyone in the vicinity to be especially cautious at this time," said Mr. Louisa.

He said communication to the St. Maarten Medical Center was a priority from the moment the damage to the cabinet was reported.

Efforts are also being made to reconnect some 300 plus subscribers in the area as soon as possible.
