U.S. Consulate General Promotes Urban Dance Collective Energy Street Festival “The Film”

The United States Consulate General Curacao is proud to help promote a locally-produced film featuring Niles Ford and two colleagues of New York-based Urban Dance Collective (UDC) who participated at the Energy Street Festival last February. Ford and his professional UDC dancers were sponsored by the Consulate and brought to Curacao as a cultural program under the theme of African-American Heritage Month.

UDC combined the uniqueness of the Curacao dance and music culture with the African-American cultural background which has led to an inspiring film.

The visiting dance professionals enlightened the local dance community as well as audiences at cultural events during their February 2011 visit. Also, UDC provided dance clinics for youth and a train-the-trainer program for teachers and educators.

Flash mob events in the historic UNESCO World Heritage downtown area of Willemstad, Curacao, and other locations on the island together with local performers, were unique and a new experience for Curacao’s diverse residents and tourists.

Filmmaker Felix de Rooij and cameraman Kirk Claes did an outstanding job in blending visual art, spoken word, and music into a film featuring a hybrid of many techniques including ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, club dancing, and pedestrian movement.

The movie is presented in cooperation with Archimedium, Foundation of Dreams, Prins Bernhard Culture Fund, and Teatro Luna Blou on June 2, 2001 at 20:00 at Teatro Luna Blou. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of Teatro Luna Blou from Saturday 28 May (open at 12 noon) for Naf. 10.00 and a DVD of the film is available at the same event for Naf 25.00.
