21 killed by mudslides in Venezuela

In Venezuela at least 21 people died in mudslides and floods following prolonged rainfall in recent days. Thousands of people have fled their homes. Two oil refineries were virtually shut down.

The government has declared a state of emergency in three northern states and in the capital Caracas. Schools are closed and shelters opened. Because of the landslides, some roads have been blocked. The rain is expected at least another few days.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez even offered to host 25 families affected, to stay at the presidential palace. Caracas is along the Caribbean coast and many poor Venezuelans live in slums neighbourhoods along the steep slopes that were built up. In 1999, mudslides occured and about 10,000 people died.
