WILLEMSTAD — Between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the police had to assist people who were affected by flooding (25 cases in total). The heavy downpour between three and five o’clock this morning led to almost 80 mm of rainfall. The soil is meanwhile supersaturated and cannot take more water.

However, the Meteorological Service reports there’s a chance of local showers up to tomorrow morning. At three o’clock Thursday morning, the weather service issued an official weather warning in connection with the rain and warned amongst others against motorists using the roads. The warning was withdrawn again at four-thirty, when the rain lessened. However, by that time, 23 houses in various districts had already flooded and the police had to evacuate six people.
The water from Dam Pretu at Groot St. Joris is overflowing and cannot drain away. The residents have no way out now, while the sheep sought safety at the highest spot in the surrounding (see pictures). The former department of Agriculture, Stock Breeding and Fisheries visited the area this morning and promised to deepen the gullies. The dams of Muizenberg and Kura Piedra are also at the point of flowing over. At dozens of places on the island, the channels are completely under water again, while the channel at Breezes is still being deepened.
Gas station
A dozen motorists were stuck this morning after refueling at the Sta. Maria gas station. The ground is so saturated that the water seeped into one of the underground tanks and mixed with the gasoline. Tow trucks drove back and forth, while employees from the gas station pumped the gasoline from the tanks into blue garbage bins.
At Ser’i Kandela on Kaya Sepelin, the ground started subsiding and the garage of a house that is built on the edge of a leveling, fell in and on several parked automobiles (see picture). There were no wounded, but the eleven residents had to be evacuated. On the road to Hato, a huge boulder dislodged, but landed alongside the road. Nobody was wounded here either. On Piscaderaweg, a tree had fallen across the road and Kaya Merida and Weg naar Bullenbaai (near the entrance to Samí Liber) were flooded. The police were further called in for houses at Seru Fortuna, Kaya Ore, Kaya Merida, Kaya Garapa, Diamantweg, Kaya Cruzeiro, Gato, Juan Domingo, Kaya Andira, Van Goghstraat and at Ronde Klip. The run-down house on the corner of Witteweg, where another house had already collapsed last weekend, was recently demolished by way of precaution.
As the showers, caused by the humidity in the driven air, are slowly moving westerly, the Meteorological Service expects that the local showers until tomorrow morning could cause flooding. The sea is moderate to rough. Some rain figures from the past 24 hours are Grote Berg 78.6 mm, Zumbu 8.4 mm, Soto 16 mm, San Juan 9.7 mm, Seru Mahuma 68.9 mm and Hato 52.1 mm.
