Children’s Book week 2010

From the 21st to 28th November Children’s Book week 2010 promotes reading and the love of nature in books.

Our theme this year is "St. Maarten’s Nature and Environment"

Under the slogan "Read Green, Live Green … All the cool kids are doing it!"

Children’s Book week 2010 will be launched on Sunday the 21st of November with a grand opening parade. This will be the kick off for a week packed with actives centered on reading and love of nature.

Sunday 21st Grand Opening Parade

All children are welcome!

Dress up as your favorite St. Maarten animal, one of our beautiful local plants, or where a green T-shirt.

Start: In front of the Government Administration Building at 2.00 pm sharp.

After arriving at the library there will be fun filled program for the children. Library string bags will be on sale for $5, and T-shirt for $8, and free gifts from G.E.B.E.

Tuesday 23rd Rights of the Child & Book Launching

· Presentation about: NON-VIOLENCE – a process of living together that has to be learnt.

Presenter: UNESCO representative: Marcellia Henry.

Location: Philipsburg Jubilee Library

Time: 3 pm to 4 pm

· Book Launching:

Gerda Heil and Riet Sint will launch their book St. Maarten Insight.

St. Maarten Insight covers the history up until the present day situation of Country St. Maarten.

Location: Hall of the Philipsburg Jubilee Library

Starting time: 5pm

Wednesday 24th Run-around Nature Quiz

An exciting and educational Run around Nature Quiz will be held at the Raul Illidge Sports Complex in Cay Hill. Teams from six different schools will battle for the victory of their school; winners will receive Prizes.

Location: Raul Illidge Sports Complex in Cay Hill.

Time: 3 pm to 5 pm.

 

Thursday 25th Prize Giving & Author Book Reading

· Author Book Reading

Well-known children authors will come to the Library to to read from their books.

Time: 3 pm to 4 pm Location: Philipsburg Jubilee Library

· Prize Giving ceremony

Prizes will be awarded to the schools that participated in the poster contest and display competition. Schools who want to participate in the competitions have to submit their poster and/or display at the latest on the Thursday 18th of November 2010 before 8pm.

The prize giving ceremony will take place on Thursday November 25th between 4 pm and 5 pm.

Friday 26th Plant for your planet

"All the cool kids" are welcome to plant a tree at the library. They will also receive information on the purpose of going back to nature. This activity will be hosted by: Mr. Ras Bush Man from the Freedom Fighters Foundation.

Time: 2 pm to 4 pm.

Saturday 27th Nature watch and environment clean up tour & Story Time @ the Library

· Nature watch and environment clean up tour

Children are invited to sign up and be part of our nature watch and environment clean up tour. Route: Zagersgut Seventh Day Adventist church Bird watch, Iguana Farm (Oyster Pond Road), Butterfly Farm, Le Galion. We will clean up Le Galion beach and children who have permission from their parents can take a swim to cool off. The rest of the day will be a Family Fund day.

Space is limited; a bus will pick up all children who are registered and who have paid their small contribution $5.00

Registration forms will be available at the library from the 8th of November 2010.

· Story Time @ the library

Children who didn’t get the chance to go on the nature watch still can come to the library and enjoy story time with Reeder Jno Baptist from 11 am to 12 pm. And the fun will not stop there; Mr. Friendly will make his debut performance at the library from 12 to 12.30.

Who is Mr. Friendly? Well he is a Salty Pelican, born on St. Maarten’s Day many, many years ago. His goal is to instill the Super host principals of friendliness and serve to youth from a young age to bring back the friendly island.

Sunday 28th Explore your Island Hike

Philipsburg Jubilee Library’s former director Mrs. Ans Koolen will take 60 students who have registered and paid their small contribution of $2.00 on a small tour along the beautiful coast of Guana Bay. The Hike will take the students through parts where nothing has been built as yet.

A bus will pick up the children from the library at 7 am and bring them back by 10.30 am. The hike will not only be enjoyable but also educational.

Registration forms will be available on the 8th of November 2010.

Reading

Children’s book week is about the fun of reading.

Readers can earn a t-shirt with this year’s logo for Free!

If you are 8 years and older you can participate.

As of November 8th until November 27th all interested children can sign up and read 3 books, make a book report and receive a free t-shirt.

 

Poetry

Fourth grade children are invited to write a poem about nature and or the environment of St. Maarten. The best poems will be compiled into a book.

The children of the best selected poems will receive a t-shirt with this year’s logo for Free!

 

Children’s book week 2010 promised to be a wonderful week of reading and environmental education and family fun!
