Prime Minister Wescot-Williams added that even though Sint Maarten was but a small island nation in the sea of nations, the people of the island are very much part of the global community of nations, and the work carried out by the UN was also in the interests of the people of Sint Maarten.

"Having achieved the status of autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, our island nation will have representation at several organizations linked to the UN.

"The UN for more than 60-years has played an integral role in promoting peace, development and human rights. Country Sint Maarten reaffirms its support to the mission of the UN in promoting universal values such as tolerance, respect and human dignity.

"These key principles are also enshrined in the constitution of country Sint Maarten, the bedrock of our democratic society. I would like to conclude by congratulating the citizens of the world on UN Day, October 24," Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams told the Government Information Service (GIS) in her message for UN Day.

On 24 October 1945, the United Nations was formally established after a majority of its founding members ratified a treaty setting up the world body.
